PARTICIPANT TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Event: Terrur Zabbar Halloween Festival
Venue: WWII shelter in Misraħ San Ġakbu, Żabbar
1. Nature of the experience
1.1 This activity is an immersive Halloween horror escape tunnel taking place inside an authentic underground World War II shelter.
1.2 The experience involves searching for designated objects while encountering actors, frightening scenes, sudden surprises, shouting and deliberately unsettling behaviour.
1.3 The setting includes very limited lighting, uneven flooring, enclosed underground spaces and restricted natural ventilation. These conditions may cause discomfort, anxiety or disorientation.
1.4 The experience is intended to be frightening. Participants must read these terms before booking and decide whether the activity is suitable for them.
1.5 Participation is voluntary. Every participant may ask for the activity to stop at any time.
2. Age restrictions and group size
2.1 All participants must be 18 years of age or older on the date of participation. No exceptions will be made, including where a parent or guardian offers consent.
2.2 The organiser may request valid photographic identification to verify age. Admission may be refused where age cannot be verified.
2.3 Each group may contain a maximum of 10 participants, subject to any lower occupancy limit required for safety.
2.4 Additional persons cannot join a group once the activity has started.
2.5 The person making the booking must share these terms with all group members. Each participant must personally confirm their acceptance before entering.
3. Arrival and check-in
3.1 All participants must arrive at least 15 minutes before their booked starting time.
3.2 This time is required for securing mobile phones and attending the safety briefing.
3.3 All group members must attend the full safety briefing. Anyone who misses it may be refused entry until an appropriate briefing can be provided.
3.4 Late arrival may prevent participation in the booked session. Staff will advise whether another slot is available.
3.5 The applicable policy on late arrivals, missed sessions and booking changes must be displayed before payment.
4. Duration and challenge rules
4.1 The activity lasts a maximum of 20 minutes, excluding the safety briefing and the return of personal belongings.
4.2 Before entry, staff will explain the objective, the objects to be found and how successful completion will be verified.
4.3 The 20-minute timer starts when staff announce the beginning of the challenge.
4.4 Participants must find all designated objects within the time limit and present them or complete the agreed verification procedure explained during the briefing.
4.5 No physical force, climbing, dismantling or damage is required to complete the challenge.
4.6 Staff will announce when the time has expired. Participants must then stop searching and follow instructions to leave.
5. Money-back challenge
5.1 If the group finds all designated objects and completes the stated verification procedure within 20 minutes, the admission fees paid for that group’s session will be refunded in full.
5.2 The organiser must explain all challenge requirements before the timer starts. No additional winning conditions may be introduced after the challenge begins.
5.3 The refund covers the admission fees actually paid for the successful session. It does not cover travel or other personal expenses.
5.4 The challenge must be completed in accordance with the rules. Deliberate cheating, hiding objects before a session, obtaining unauthorised assistance or damaging the venue to obtain objects may invalidate a claim. Staff must explain the reason for any such decision.
6. Mobile phones and personal belongings
6.1 Mobile phones must be left in the designated secure storage area before entering the shelter.
6.2 Phones must be switched off or placed on silent before being handed over or stored.
6.3 Photography, video recording, audio recording and the use of personal lighting devices during the activity are prohibited unless expressly authorised by staff.
6.4 Staff will explain how belongings are identified, stored and returned. Participants should bring as few valuables as possible.
6.5 Anyone who relies on a phone or electronic device for a medical or accessibility need must inform staff before depositing it so that suitable arrangements can be considered.
7. Shelter conditions and safe movement
7.1 Participants acknowledge that the venue is a historic WWII shelter rather than a modern, purpose-built entertainment facility.
7.2 The floor is uneven and lighting is very limited. Participants must walk carefully, watch their footing and follow the route indicated by staff.
7.3 Running, pushing, chasing other participants, climbing, crawling into unauthorised areas and deliberately blocking passageways are prohibited.
7.4 Participants must not touch electrical installations, cables, emergency equipment, structural fittings or any area marked as out of bounds.
7.5 Historic surfaces, walls and fittings must not be pulled, struck, scratched or otherwise damaged.
7.6 Enclosed spaces and restricted natural ventilation may feel uncomfortable. Anyone experiencing breathing difficulty, dizziness, overheating or distress must alert staff immediately.
7.7 The organiser must maintain safe conditions and suspend admission or stop the activity if ventilation, visibility, occupancy or other conditions become unsafe.
8. Health, wellbeing and accessibility
8.1 Participants must consider whether they can safely take part in a frightening activity involving darkness, uneven ground and enclosed underground spaces.
8.2 Anyone with a condition that could be affected by these features should seek appropriate medical advice before booking. Relevant concerns may include heart or respiratory conditions, severe claustrophobia, panic attacks, balance or mobility difficulties, recent injuries or surgery, and pregnancy.
8.3 Participants must not enter if they are already feeling unwell or believe participation could put them or others at risk.
8.4 The organiser may refuse or postpone participation where a specific safety concern cannot reasonably be addressed. The reason and available booking or refund options will be explained.
9. Actor interaction and physical contact
9.1 Actors may approach participants, shout or yell at them, make sudden movements and behave in a frightening manner as part of the performance.
9.2 Participants must not deliberately touch, grab, push, strike, kick, restrain or threaten actors. Participants must keep their hands to themselves and avoid reacting physically to scares.
9.3 Actors may make limited, controlled physical contact. The nature of the permitted contact will be explained before entry.
9.4 Actors must not strike, shove, drag, lift or restrain participants, interfere with their breathing, touch intimate areas, or physically prevent them from leaving.
9.7 Accidental contact caused by a startled reaction must be reported and assessed fairly. Deliberate aggression may result in immediate removal.
10. Stop procedure and emergencies
10.1 If anyone feels unwell, becomes distressed or asks to stop, the activity will stop immediately for the whole group.
10.2 The safety phrase is “STOP THE ACTIVITY”.
10.3 Participants do not need to justify a request to stop. Health and safety take priority over completing the challenge.
10.4 On hearing the safety phrase or identifying distress, actors must stop their performance and physical contact. Staff will provide assistance and direct participants towards a safe exit.
10.5 Participants must follow evacuation instructions, walk carefully and leave belongings or challenge objects behind if instructed.
10.6 Staff will determine whether the session can safely resume. A participant who remains unwell must not be pressured to continue.
10.7 Fees are not refundable.
11. Clothing and prohibited items
11.1 Participants must wear secure, closed-toe footwear suitable for uneven ground. High heels, loose slippers and unsuitable footwear may result in refusal of entry.
11.2 Clothing should allow comfortable movement. Long trailing costumes, obstructive masks and accessories that could catch on surfaces are not permitted.
11.3 Weapons, replica weapons, sharp objects, fireworks, open flames and other dangerous items are prohibited.
11.4 Smoking, vaping, eating and drinking inside the shelter are prohibited.
11.5 Participants must not enter under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Anyone whose behaviour suggests impaired judgement or unsafe conduct may be refused entry or removed.
12. Behaviour and damage
12.1 Participants must treat staff, actors and other participants respectfully and follow reasonable safety instructions.
12.2 Harassment, discriminatory abuse, sexual misconduct, threats and deliberate damage will not be tolerated.
12.3 Objects and props may only be handled as explained during the briefing. No object may be removed from the venue.
12.4 Staff may stop the session or remove a participant whose conduct creates a safety risk or seriously disrupts the experience.
12.5 A participant may be held responsible for reasonable, evidenced losses caused by their deliberate or negligent damage, subject to applicable law. Normal wear or accidental damage without fault will not automatically result in a charge.
13. Booking changes, cancellations and organiser interruptions
13.1 Prices and any booking charges must be communicated before payment.
13.2 Once booked, fees are non-refundable unless an emergency. Fees will be refundable only on the discretion of the organisers.
13.3 If the organiser cancels a session, participants will be offered a suitable alternative date or a refund for the cancelled session.
13.4 If a session cannot be completed because of an organiser-related technical, staffing or safety issue, the group will be offered a replacement session or an appropriate refund.
13.5 Material changes to the experience or these terms must be communicated before participation. New conditions cannot retrospectively remove rights attached to an existing booking.
14. Acknowledgement of risks and responsibility
14.1 Participants acknowledge the disclosed risks of this experience, including fright, emotional discomfort, sudden noise, limited visibility, uneven surfaces and enclosed underground surroundings.
14.2 Participants agree to take reasonable care of themselves and others, follow the safety briefing and immediately report illness, distress or hazards.
